Boards lightly rubbed, lightly foxed throughout. 1830 Full-Leather. xxiii, 424; 416, 33, [3] pp. 8vo. French text. Full leather, gilt and blind stamped decorations, gilt titles on morocco spine labels, marbled edges and endpapers. A collection of letters by the author of Pensees, most notable for their attack on casuistry, a common rhetorical method at the time, especially among Jesuits, who Pascal specifically condemns for their lax morals. These later influenced the writings of Voltaire and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The second volume includes his famous Pensees, along with Bordas Demoulin's Eloge.
