Former library copy, usual marks. Light stain to spine base. 1996 Trade Paperback. 199, [1] pp. A descriptive tour guide of the Erie Canal for cyclists and hikers. The Erie Canal was an engineering marvel both in its day during the 19th century and now at the preface tot he 21st century. The original locks were made of stone blocks solidified together with mud. No the mud of the earth bu the mud of masons, cement. This was not the relatively high tech portland cement which we have today but a more rudimentary mortar. It has kept the locks together for over 150 years. The Route Guide includes sections of the Old (c. 1840) Erie Canal which are along the described route. Fortunately for bicyclists and hikers the Old Erie Canal and its locks have been subjected to the influence of preservationists. The Old Canal's towpath and right of way have been converted into parks.
