Complete in four volumes. Vellum spines and corners, morocco spine labels, gilt titles and decorations, marbled boards. A biography of Pope Leo the Tenth, who served from 1513-1521. A member of the influential Medici family, Leo granted indulgences to donors for the reconstruction of St. Peter's Basilica, which Martin Luther denounced in his 95 Theses. Despite these difficulties, Leo is also remembered as a patron and advocate of literature and the arts.
