Last night about 9 o'clock a pistol shot was heard on Allen Street and from the direction which the report came it appeared to be somewhere in the rear of the Alhambra or Occidental saloons. A policeman procured a lantern and made a search of the premises without finding any dead. It was supposed some despondent wretch had committed suicide, and therefore we are disappointed in not having a dead man for breakfast. 'Twas ever thus. Daily Epitaph, March 24, 1882. The hearse, received by Mr. A. J. Ritter yesterday, is a handsome one, having been manufactured at Newark, N.J., and costing $1,800 when new. Anyone kicking the bucket now can get a ride out of town in style.
