First trade edition. Inscribed, signed, and dated by author on front flyleaf ('Inscribed affectionately for Julian Street, Jr., by his old, old family friend Booth Tarkington. Indianapolis, April 7, 1940'). This volume was acquired from Street's personal collection - his father and the author were good friends, and collaborated on The Country Cousin: A Comedy in Four Acts. Minor loss of gilt from titles, corners lightly rubbed. Laid in are two typed sheets labeled 'From a letter from Dr. Erwin Panofsky' which was written to Tarkington, and reviews the work. It seems likely the author included this when presenting the book to Street. 1939 Hard Cover. xx, 249, [3] pp. 8vo. A collection of brief biographies by the American novelist and playwright, one of only three to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction twice (the others are Faulkner and Updike). Includes biographical sketches of Ben Johnson, John Milton, Isaac Newton, and many more, with color portraits of each.
