Christian Johann Heinrich Heine (13 December 1797 in Dusseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany – 17 February 1856 in Paris, France) was a journalist, essayist, literary critic, and one of the most significant German romantic poets. He is remembered chiefly for selections of his lyric poetry, many of which were set to music in the form of lieder (art songs) by German composers.
