Translated from the Russian by Marie von Thilo. The first of Dostoevsky's novels to be translated into English. The title was later translated as House of the Dead, which is the title by which it is now commonly known. In 1849, Dostoevsky was arrested for being a part of a revolutionary group that owned an illegal printing press. He was sentenced to be executed, but the sentence was changed at the last minute, and he was sent to a prison camp in Siberia instead. This novel is based on that experience. It was originally published serially in the Russian journal VremyaA concise and objective account of Dostoevsky's personal experiences while he was serving his prison sentence in Siberia. It is a detached and intensely realistic document, completely devoid of self-pity, preaching or moralizing.A semi-autobiographical novel published in 1860–2 in the journal Vremya by Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky, which portrays the life of convicts in a Siberian prison camp... The book is a loosely-knit collection of facts, events and philosophical discussion organised by 'theme' rather than as a continuous story. Dostoyevsky himself spent four years in exile in such a camp following his conviction for involvement in the Petrashevsky Circle. This experience allowed him to describe with great authenticity the conditions of prison life and the characters of the convicts. Keywords: FYODOR DOSTOEVSKY HOUSE OF DEAD LITERATURE RUSSIAN BIOGRAPHY SIBERIA
