Very faint stain on front board, corners rubbed, pages toned. 1938 Hard Cover. xii, 133 pp. [Benjamin] Franklin was a prime mover in establishing the Pennsylvania Hospital, the first permanent hospital built in the future United States. (See Garrison-Morton # 7429.) One hundred and eighty-four years ago Benjamin Franklin, then a member of the Board of the Pennsylvania Hospital, prepared and printed in his own printing plant, a history of the hospital. This he called Some Account of the Pennsylvania Hospital; From its first Rise, to the Beginning of the Fifth month, called May, 1754. A copy of that book may be seen in the Hospital's library. The typography and format of Franklin's history are models of good taste. In the making of the present volume the printers have followed in general the size, format and typography of the earlier work. Following page 6 will be found facsimiles of the title page and one of the text pages as produced by Franklin. The type of this present book is Caslon, the only face so far as we know, that was used in the shop of B. Franklin and D. Hall.--The Engle Press, Philadelphia, PA.When the Pennsylvania Hospital was founded in 1751 by Dr. Thomas Bond and Benjamin Franklin, it was for the distinct purpose of caring not only for citizens of Philadelphia who might be injured or acutely ill, but also for strangers in the city, who could not be provided with proper care in inns or lodgings. For this reason it can justly assert its claim to be considered as the oldest hospital in the United States.--IntroductionContains illustrations made from drawings by Mr. Fred. de P.
