Lightly smudged on reverse, slight forward curl. 1918 Postcard. An original photographic postcard, issued during World War I, depicting the wreckage of Quentin Roosevelt's airplane, and his body. As noted on the photo, it was taken ten minutes after his plane crashed, having been shot down over France on Bastille Day (July 14, 1918). This photograph caused somewhat of an uproar when it was released - Quentin was President Theodore Roosevelt's youngest son, and an accomplished fighter pilot. German troops buried him with full military honors, both in honor of his skill as a pilot, and in recognition of his father Colonel Roosevelt, whom they considered a great American.
