The well known letters of Lady Montagu, wife of the British ambassador to Turkey, described by Billie Melman as 'the very first example of a secular work by a woman about the Muslim Orient' (from Women's Orients: English Women and the Middle East, Sexuality, Religion and Work, 1718–1918). They are notable for their access to sites inaccessible to men, and for their criticism of other contemporary accounts of the area written by men. Letters and Works was originally published in 1837, and saw several revisions.
