1856 2nd printing. Boards a bit rubbed with minor loss from spine head & foot, hinges just starting, ink name (Henry Hardwicke) on title page. 1855 Hard Cover. vi, 192, , 29 pp. 8vo. Brown blind-stamped cloth, gilt titles. Hoolihan 276. In reference to the original edition, Hoolihan states, Beecher expresses anxieties reflective of a nation in the midst of unpredictable economic, social and religious change... Like Sylvester Graham and other health reform authors, Beecher harkens to a simpler and more pure era in American life, when children did not have 'sallow or pale complexions, or look delicate or partially misformed'. To remedy the national decline is the purpose of Beecher's Letters, which is divided into five parts: I. Organs of the human body; II. Laws of health; III. Abuses of the bodily organs; IV. Evils resulting from such abuses; V. Remedies for these evils. Letter XVII provides a fascinating personal account of Beecher's attempts to regain her own health at the hands of practitioners of various schools. Her eighteenth letter is a statistical survey of the health of American women undertaken during tours of the United States. Letter XXV describes the American Women's Educational Association, whose object was 'to aid in securing to American women a liberal education, honorable position, and remunerative employment in their appropriate profession; the distinctive profession of women being considered as embracing the training of the human mind, the care of the human body in infancy and sickness, and the conservation of the family state'. Appended to the Letters is a 'Communication from Mrs. Dr. R.B. Gleason' on various issues of women's health. Rachel Brooks Gleason was co-proprietor of the Elmira Water Cure, Elmira, N.Y.. Beecher died in Elmira, where she had gone to live in 1877 with her half-brother Thomas.
