Includes photographic frontispiece of Beard, and pen and ink sketches by Beard which originally appeared in his The Field and Forest Handy Book and The American Boy's Handy Book. Foreword by Theodore Roosevelt, who states He is typical of the best in our country. I feel that one of the greatest organizations we have is the Boy Scouts of America, and Scouting and Uncle Dan are synonymous. Introduction by Hamlin Garland, which includes firsthand accounts of early encounters with Beard -- the two met at a Henry George meeting, and Garland recalls Beard telling him of the beginnings of the 'Sons of Daniel Boone'.
