Miolans is in eastern France. The print shows the Fortress of Miolans situated atop a rocky promontory. It was positioned here to control the juncture of the Isere and Arc rivers. It became a prison in the mid-fifteenth century, and continued to operate as such until the end of the eighteenth century, during which time it confined the Marquis de Sade (who later escaped). It was compared with the Bastille, and its dungeons were named after, among other things, the books of Dante's Divine Comedy.
