Major General Gouverneur K. Warren, a member of General Meade's staff, helped to secure the position by personally diverting troops to the key elevation just as the Confederates were about to attack. Colonel Patrick O'Rorke, a recent West Point graduate (who finished first in his class), led his regiment in a desperate countercharge with unloaded muskets, helping to save the Federal line of defense.
