A publication detailing the legal action Whistler took against critic John Ruskin for disparaging marks made in a review. Whistler sought 1,000 pounds damages; he was awarded one farthing. This work was pirated several times in the U.S. and Europe (this is referenced in the front matter). KEYWORDS: ART HISTORY ARTIST WHISTLER Condition Notes: First authorized American edition. Front hinge loosening, boards rubbed. Affixed to the front blanks are newspaper clippings of a review of a later edition of the work, a biographical article about Whistler, and a brief article about the discovery of some of his early work.
