A long, leisurely novel of a remote settlement in Maine, a settlement so isolated that the War of Independence was only known by hearsay. A tale of pioneers, ordinary people in an ordinary frontier life, of sturdy spirits and enduring patience of a love that was greater than the events that held the lovers apart, of a happy marriage and the seasonal round and recurrent promise. Historical novel without fancy trappings, solid, steady going, with plenty of incidental drama. Good meat and potatoes fare, for the dependable Ben Ames Williams' market.
