Color frontispiece, 19 plates throughout text depicting artwork from various signboards from as early as ancient Pompeii and Herculaneum. These were used before the introduction of house numbers as a way of identifying homes, and were useful in times before literacy was widespread. This work provides a survey of the different varieties used throughout history.
