Significant loss from spine head, some from base and front joint - visible beneath the spine leather between sewings are pieces of manuscript in what appears to be Greek. Clasps missing, though portions of catches remain. Board edges worn. First gather loose. Modern ink stamp on recto and contemporary handwritten note on author on verso of front endpaper. 'V' on front cover appears over erasure mark as if this was corrected. 1567 Full-Leather. 8vo. 6 3/4 x 4 5/8. Pi^1, *^8, a – z^8, A - Z^8, Aa – Oo^8. [14], 911, [46] index. Latin text. Original full leather over wooden boards, blind ruled borders with second embossed interior border picturing Justice, Judith, etc., ruled center panel with 'AMV' and date. Design mirrored on rear panel without text. An early imprint (the original appeared in 1550-52) of the historical work by Paolo Giovio, the Italian Bishop of Nocera de' Pagani, most well known for his accounts of the Italian Wars. Giovio also worked as a physician, and was known for his collection of portraits depicting important individuals of the time.
